exploring inter-cultural connections in the north

About the publication

The publication has been developed as a series of visual essays interspersed with imaginative text and a glossary of key terms in Finnish, Scots and Gaelic. The essays show archival research and fieldwork undertaken in Finland, alongside immersive pedagogies enacted through the project. The publication commences with the historic and contemporary use of the Finnish laavu, its changing uses as a sheltering structure. It then moves on to unfold the habitats and landscapes of the shieling and gives an insight into the multi-sensory workshop hosted at The Glasgow School of Art’s Highlands & Islands campus. This workshop was an imaginative journey through rural Scotland which involved engaging with sense-scape and story to bring the heritage landscape of transhumance to life.
